Summer has arrived and, if you’re anything like me, these warmer months can make it an effortless task to exceed your budget. Socializing, attending outdoor events and numerous barbecues – it all quickly racks up! Although I’ve learnt to be thrifty over time, it’s clear that fun doesn’t always have to leave a burning hole in your pocket. Here are my favorite affordable ways to embrace the summer sun.
1. EMBRACE THE OUTDOORS
Summer provides the perfect chance to take everything outdoors. During these warm months, we often switch off the TV and spend most of our time outside, even if it’s simply in the backyard. You can take common indoor activities outside – have your meals on the back porch, read on a blanket in the yard, or even dry your laundry outdoors for extra savings!
2. ARRANGE A BUDGET-CONSCIOUS GATHERING
Now that we are all swinging back into the outdoor mood again, it’s time to reconnect with close friends and organize an economical get-together. You can host a potluck wherein everyone contributes with a dish, or serve finger foods and have your guests bring their own beverages. Keep the gathering outdoors for easier clean-up. Reusable dishes are both cost-efficient and eco-friendly.
3. CALL OF THE GREAT OUTDOORS – CAMPING!
While camping equipment can be pricey, the authentic experience involves getting back to nature and sleeping under the stars in a tent. It encourages family bonding, is accessible to all ages and is a favorite among children. If a camping trip isn’t feasible, set a tent in your backyard for a similar feel – catch fireflies, roast marshmallows and enjoy!
4. PLAN A PICNIC
For me, picnics represent the essence of summer. Having regular picnics has become our favorite way to reconnect mid-week amidst our busy schedules. Not only does it break the monotony, it also creates a sense of anticipation for our family. Always remember to leave the area cleaner than when you found it.
5. EMBRACE THE TRAIL
Walking in the park or hiking does wonders in helping you connect with nature. It’s a precious sensory experience – the views, the sounds, the smells, the sense of peace. Regardless of where you live, you’ll surely find some hiking trails nearby. If you have kids, introduce them to smaller trails to get them accustomed to the experience.
6. GO FOR A BIKE RIDE
Dust off your old bike or invest in an affordable one and explore your surroundings on two wheels. Biking with a child seat allows even toddlers to enjoy it. This gentle workout for the whole family is refreshing, fun, and all it requires are helmets for safety!
7. PLANT SOMETHING
Dig your hands into the soil, plant a seed, and watch life sprout – whether it’s a flowery bloom or a tasty vegetable. Starting a home garden is not only cost-effective but also educational and health promoting for your kids.
8. VISIT FREE LOCAL FESTIVALS
Most towns charm their citizens with wonderful summer festivals, regardless of the size of the community. These festivals are filled with music, parades, crafts, and delicious food.
9. RELIVE YOUR CHILDHOOD
Who says only kids can have all the fun? Revisit your childhood activities – catch fireflies, play hide and seek, and soak in the summer splendour without caring about people’s opinions!
10. PREPARE REFRESHING TREATS
Indulge your sweet tooth with homemade ice cream or popsicles – ideal for summer. All you need is some store-bought juice and popsicle sticks.
11. SQUEEZE IN FUN EXERCISE
Plan family games such as kickball, croquet, or badminton to include a fun, active element in your routine. This also is a great way to interact with your neighbours and make new friends.
12. ORGANIZE A YARD SALE
Use the warm weather to make some money from the items you don’t need anymore. Arrange a yard sale and use the proceeds to plan further summer activities for your family.
13. PLAN TODDLER-SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES
Some activities are better enjoyed by toddlers. Outdoor activities like sidewalk chalk painting or playing with water on a hot day can keep them engaged for hours. Plus, it’s easier to clean up afterward!
14. TRY GEOCACHING
Experience the delight of treasure hunting with the geocaching app. It’s an affordable activity that encourages exploration in the outdoors.
15. PICK BERRIES
As berry season arrives, seize the opportunity to pick your fresh fruits. This activity is both enjoyable and healthy, allowing you to select the ripest fruits.
In conclusion, try to maximize your time outdoors this summer. Malls are neither cost-friendly nor reminiscent of summertime. Take time to unwind and savour the summer – it will disappear before you know it!
What are you planning this summer? Are you considering any other budget-friendly activities?
